About

TED Conferences

TED is a global foundation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading which brings together some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers share what they are most passionate about. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design – three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future.

Since then, its scope has become ever broader, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline– science, arts, politics, global issues, media, architecture, music and much more. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, etc.

With its two annual conferences, video website TED.com, initiatives and community projects, TED is now a platform and a global movement focused on meaningful change through the power of ideas. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world and be part of the worldwide TED community; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe amplifying the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

TEDx Programme

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

This non-for profit initiative is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. In its third year of running, there are over 800 TEDx conferences running per year. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis with the purpose of inspiring innovation, thought leadership and visionary insight.

TEDxSalford

TEDxSalford is a not-for-profit conference held in Salford Quays which brings some of the world’s leading intellectuals and thinkers under one roof. It is one of the largest TEDx events in the world with over 1900 attendees taking part in our previous event. By believing in the spirit and power of ideas to bring change for the betterment of society, this is an initiative that brings people together, inspire and empower lives and result in much needed community cohesion.

The project contributes to the vision of MediaCityUK which is to become the global hub of innovation, possess world class cutting edge technology, show-case the ideal media infrastructure and quality content creation. The event is viewed all over the world via live-stream and represents an opportunity for Salford to project its positivity to the world. For the students and professionals of Salford and Manchester, it is a magnificent opportunity to not only engage in an authentic dialogue with an elusive yet valuable audience: passionate, open-minded people in our community but be able to network and be involved in a student-driven initiative that has begun from Salford, and is simultaneously part of one of the biggest and most widely connected networks in the world.
