The driving force of the global human rights agenda and a long-term activist on poverty and justice, our next confirmed guest is Salil Shetty – the eighth Secretary General of Amnesty International.
The son of a campaigning journalist father and a feminist mother, Salil Shetty’s history as an activist dates back to his student days in India. Today he leads Amnesty International’s worldwide work to end the abuse of human rights. Fighting against injustice on the highest level, he is also the organisation’s chief political adviser, strategist and a spokesperson.
Previous to work in Amnesty, Shetty was director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign having a crucial role in building the global advocacy campaign for the Millennium Development Goals to fight poverty, illiteracy and disease. His remarkable record also includes transforming ActionAid into one of the world’s foremost international development NGOs.
Having joined the Amnesty International as a Secretary General in July 2010, Shetty is the man behind the international human rights campaigns, taking them to highest levels of Government, United Nations and business. From UN to World Economic Forum, he has represented Amnesty in major meetings and conferences worldwide.
Salil Shetty has been seen around the world collaborating with grassroots activists, members of the media and political leaders. He has defended the rights of indigenous people in Australia as well as participated in the aftermath of Egypt uprising.
