Admit it – at some point in your life you have thought about being a superhero. Whether it is the ability to fly like Superman, regenerate like Wolverine or teleport in space and time like Hiro Nakumara, superhuman abilities have always seemed to fascinate us. With Iron Man 3 released last week and many more superhero films to be released soon, it is clear that the mainstream public has a huge appetite for super characters. The Problems and Pleasures of Mathematics

Mathematics for me as a child was a thing of nightmares. Times tables were terrifying and algebra dizzying. It completely eluded me for a long time. Well, to be honest, it still does, I have no skill for maths. But at least now I can see its beauty and its importance.
If I had known as a frightened school child about the grand scale of mathematics, about infinity for example, I may still have been frightened but at least I would been interested. Read More »
