What do International Space Station and social entrepreneurs have in common? NASA astronaut Ron Garan is a driving force of Unity Node, an example of what may result when changemakers sit down, or rather go to space, and put their heads together.

TEDxSalford was honoured to have NASA astronaut Ron Garan , a space exploring philanthropist who believes in the power of social entrepreneurship and collaborative efforts of humanity to improve life on earth. By sharing his experience of living and working in space, Ron wishes to spread the humbling views of the orbital perspective, without having to be in the orbit.

“We can look down from our orbital perspective and realise that each one of us is riding through the Universe together on this spaceship we call Earth, that we are all interconnected, that we are all in this together, that we are all family.” Ron Garan

Unity Node is an unprecedented endeavour to change the world in a profound and positive way: it aims to bring together millions of scattered charity organisations around the world by developing a central data tool and a menu of applications. The effort is unique in many ways; not only it leans on a celestial point of view helping people to perceive the bigger picture, but also it strives to bring unity between many social collaborative platforms.

The international team of people and organisations together form Unity Node aiming to build an open source platform, unifying the efforts of various sectors to address and respond to humanitarian needs. These organisations include United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, HUB, Geeks Without Bounds and Fragile Oasis, among others.

If anything, the International Space Station is a proof that everything is possible. The space facility created by a collaboration of 15 nations working together is a truly one of a kind achievement showing that collective efforts have far-reaching effects.

The project is gaining momentum as more and more organisations are joining the forces. You can be a changemaker too: get involved.

Need more persuasion? This stunning time-lapse video from space became viral soon after it was published and literally provides you with the orbital perspective Ron was talking about. If the breathtaking views are too much to handle, take a tour inside the space station in this exclusive video from ISS.
