Speaker Announcement – Felicity Goodey
August 8, 2012 Blog Michael Metcalf
The latest in our varied line-up of speakers for TEDxSalford 2.0, sourced from all over the world, we are pleased to announce a guest from slightly closer to home. Felicity Goodey, CBE, is a businesswoman, former senior BBC journalist and presenter, and now one of the leading lights of Salford’s incredible regeneration, and will be joining us to talk on stage at our event in October.
For 28 years, Felicity broadcast for the BBC, often appearing on Look North and North West Tonight, winning national awards for her reporting. After covering the great recession of the 70s and 80s, all the way to seeing the end of the miner’s strike, a significant impression was left on her, inspiring her to eventually end her career with the BBC to help rebuild the region she loved which was devastated by these events.
After her broadcasting career, she became one of the first directors of the Northwest Development Agency. She has also chaired Central Salford, the country’s largest urban regeneration company, tasked with helping transform the old City of Salford, and recently led the bid to secure the relocation of various major BBC departments from London to Salford Quays – including the creation of MediaCity UK, a globally significant new media hub.
Felicity also led the team which won the lottery money to build and run the world-renowned,£127 million international arts venue, The Lowry – which is exactly where TEDxSalford 2.0 is taking place.
As well as these, also chairs the regional organisation responsible for developing tourism across the North-West, and she is chairman of the University Hospital of South Manchester. Felicity holds a number of honorary degrees, as well as her CBE for services to regeneration, and in 2005 was awarded an honorary fellowship to the Royal Institute of British Architects.
It is an honour to have such a local hero speaking at the TEDxSalford 2.0 event – being literally responsible for the roof over our heads, Felicity may well be the most important person in the room.
She will be dearly welcomed to our stage at TEDxSalford 2.0, which will be hosted at the Lowry Complex, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, on 21st October 2012. Tickets are available now.
